General Information
The Research Doctorate
The Research Doctorate is the highest level of education provided for in the Italian academic system and is aimed at acquiring the skills necessary to exercise highly qualified research activities at universities, public bodies and private subjects, for the development of scientific progress and technology and the creation of a ruling class with a high-level professional culture and a corresponding international openness.
Duration
It cannot be less than 3 years. Attendance is mandatory.
Access requirements
The alternative possession of one of the following qualifications:
- Master’s degree, activated in accordance with the D.M. 270/2004
- Degree awarded according to the previous system (specialist degree or old system degree diploma)
- A similar academic qualification obtained abroad
Admission
Access takes place through public selection through the issuing of a specific announcement.
The calls will be published on the dedicated pages of the University website.
Achievement of the title
At the end of the Doctorate, the thesis is submitted to the opinion of two or more evaluators chosen from highly qualified professors and researchers from Italian or foreign institutions, external to the university and to any other subjects competing for the Doctorate.
The title of Doctor of Research is conferred by the Rector and is obtained at the end of the Doctoral cycle after passing a final exam, which consists in the public discussion of the Doctoral thesis in front of a selection board.
Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the merit ranking and are provided for the entire duration of the doctorate, subject to maintaining the merit requirements.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Law of 11/30/1989 n. 398 and subsequent amendments, which provides in Article 6, paragraph 2, that “Those who have already benefited from a scholarship cannot use it a second time for the same reason”.
